Mechanically good; but a lousy wooden frame and plywood door Apr 26, 2007
Louisville AS256P Folding Attic Ladder, 350 lbs rated
Pros:
- The metal parts of this product are well engineered and manufactured; aluminum rails and treads; steel bracing, rivets, piano door hinge, springs, raising/lowering mechanism, ladder hinges and brackets.
- Ladder hinges are very strong and are attached to the ladder's aluminum side rail with large rivets.
- Several inches had to be removed from the bottom ladder section on my unit, with two included short angled extension legs (with rubber feet) bolted to the ladder bottom. This is a much better approach than requiring the bottom to be cut at the precise angle/length.
- I weigh 270 lbs., and this ladder feels strong and stable holding me and anything I carry.
- Ladder has a substantial handrail on the right side, held on with 4 large rivets.
Cons:
- The wooden frame was terrible. See Customer Images.
- The bottom plywood trap-door was thin (3/16"), weak, split on one end and too short to even reach the end frame, much less overlap it.
- The factory set spring tension was much too strong. The only other offered spring setting is even tighter.
- The product comes in a single thickness corrugated box with no additional protection. (This works OK if you buy it locally, since you can pick one in an undamaged box.)
Summary:
I made a custom wooden frame and trap door to replace the factory frame and door. If I wasn't a woodworker with the proper tools, and also retired, this product would have been returned immediately.
4.5 stars for the metal parts of this product. 1 star for the poor quality wooden frame and plywood trap door. 3 stars overall is generous.
